I was reading an article here: http://www.lifehack.org/articles/money/wealthy-people-save-money-like-this.html

I found this is the article I found so far that matches how I handle my cashflows.
I don't think I should call it "wealthy people", more like "financially savvy people" I guess.

Most of these are pretty self explanatory except I would like to add my points in addition to what they wrote.
  1. Be careful about small expenses + Close leakages
    • Small expenses count. Be it that nice tart from the canteen that you eat everyday not because you're hungry but because you wanna treat yourself. I would still point out that you should treat yourself, but only after an accomplishment to cultivate the habit of awarding yourself for doing things rather than rewarding yourself constantly for no good reason.
    • I do walk to MRT everyday (about 10-15 minutes walk) to save on my bus fares, helps me to do some light exercise as well.
    • I don't order drinks during lunch as well as dinner (if I can) and just drink water from the pantry's water dispenser to save costs. (a drink at a hawker is ~$1.50, just imagine a drink a day for a year is half a thousand dollars!)
    • Do check out many tiny fees that comes with stuff (credit cards, fund fees, etc). They add up.
  2. Focus on the future
    • Delay gratification. Save on the present, to enjoy in the future. Save an apple today to eat 2 apples tomorrow.
    • Most people can't get the hang of it somehow. When the topic of something big comes up and you show the math, people shun it.
    • Do remember to save up. Even an annual holiday trip require savings. Leave money aside for retirement and old age. And let the compounding interest do the math.
  3. Don't buy unnecessary things to make an impression on people
    • With the advent of social media, marketing and rich parents, people have sort to compare themselves with others based on the brands of things they wear and carry.
    • My point is, Don't. There's no need to throw money into a luxury product nor compare with others. They are called luxury items for a reason (also, luxury items unlike what I have seen from others, you need to maintain them, especially leather products, the rich generally have the time and money to maintain these).
    • I have seen people sheltering their bags instead of themselves in a rain! Aren't you the one who bought the bag? Shouldn't you cost more than that bag?
    • I have seen another one where a girl begged her dad to buy her a $1200 bag before she started working! Outrageous indeed.
  4. Put things in black and white
    • Budget your expenses and write it down
    • Don't leave it to memory or rough estimation.
    • It really does help.
  5. Save a huge portion of your income + Invest your savings wisely
    • The more you save, the more money you can work with to generate more money =)
    • Invest money wisely (with reading and understanding and not on hot stock tips).
  6. Make the most of sales and bargains
    • Ok this point is only half of it.
    • You buy things when you need it, not just because it's on sale. Buying loads on sales actually makes you spend more money on things you don't really need.
    • When you need to get something, then look for discounts or sales for better value. Credit cards do help on this.
  7. Practice the Millionaire’s Formula
    • Buffet's words are pretty on the mark here. But of course, realistic goals applies.
