I was mass ironing clothes for work and CNY when I noticed that my dad’s new clothes for CNY (and work thereafter) was of a thicker material than usual.

I was surprised and asked him about it.

He told me that he got them from Robinsons at Orchard Road and that these short-sleeved shirts were of a much pricier range and “branded”, $40 each. He went on to tell me that his shirts usually cost anywhere from $10-$20+. It was only that it was on sale did he decide to buy it.

It was a kind of eye-opener for me and a reminder of the more frugal mentality of the older generation compared to the current inflated lifestyles of the present generation.

His idea of “branded” refers to just any brand attached to the shirt (usually found in Robinsons/John Little). And it doesn’t refer to more commonly known brands such as Topman, G2K, GAP, etc. To him, it was just a name but with better quality materials (thus paying more for the quality of the shirt than the brand, better value). Buying at a discounted price, creates more value for money spent.

On another note, I don’t really believe in a need to buy new clothes for CNY every year, I only buy clothes when I need to replace my worn out clothes. To make my purchases more stringent, I only buy specific shirts that meet both my desired designs and falls within my price range (I bought a couple of long-sleeved shirts from South Korea last year at about 40SGD each and it had much higher quality for the price than any store I could find locally! Pity Singapore doesn’t carry those shirts =( Might have to source online for them I guess.)
