So I took leave to rest, destress, and at least ensured I attend 1 AGM per year (hopefully more of course).

I'm kinda new to AGMs, so I don't really know what to look out for, so hopefully I learn more as the time goes.

I must say this is the most grand AGM I have ever been to, there's more than 20 registration counters, with ushers serving coffee and tea to attendees. There's even an AV team (the kind that looks like it should be at a concert) at the back!

So let's get on it.

The slides are already on Singtel's IR website, you can find it here.

So here are the tibits I learnt:
  • Telco Capex is generally 10-15% of revenue
  • Digital Life segment, Amobee makes up 95% of revenue and their aim currently is to make Amobee profitable and not the whole segment for now
    • Digital marketing business competitors are Facebook and Google, but despite the strength in the latter two, Singtel is one of the top market players to be hired as one of the independent parties to give advice
  • India is undergoing consolidation so it will be painful for the next couple of years
    • The spectrum prices in India has increased and killed many of the smaller players
    • Previously there was like 15 telcos in the retail market, now there's only 3.5 of them
    • A telco that serves the industrial segment now diverts its attention to the retail market and will compete in
  • Competition is intensifying in all regions
    • In the past, there was only Singtel, yet they are still doing well despite the entries of Starhub and M1, so TPG will be no different
    • Philippines has a 3rd entrant
    • Singtel is now a global company (Overseas exposure ~70%) rather than a Singapore only company years ago, and will compete on a global scale
  • Declining net profit for the past 5 years was mainly due to investing outside Singapore, acquisitions and FX fluctuations
  • Singtel is digitalising its own corporation to make it leaner and more efficient
    • Although some roles are made redundant
  • Data analytics competitors are Google and Facebook, but despite the strengths in the latter two, Singtel is chosen as a third party
  • Singtel is one of the market leaders in ICT services in APAC Enterprise Data Services
  • Acquisition of Trustwave was also to get cyber security talents that are in demand
  • Singtel has no involvement (suppling data centre services etc) in the recent Singhealth breach
    • That being said, Singhealth has its own data centre.
That's all about what I managed to get.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Hi azael,

Do you mind if I share your link and use your photo for my blog post? I also attended the AGM but did not manage to take any good photos.

  2. Hi Azrael,

It was very insightful. I got most of the answers I wanted. I probably do up a post over the weekend. You provided a great summary!
