There's a recent hype about "commission-less" insurance that you can buy direct from insurance companies, where you need not have some of the money going to the agent and as a result, hopefully you get a cheaper premium.

I'm using whole life insurance as an example, as my dad is into it (I still prefer going for Term&Hospitalisation + Riders and investing the rest). I won't state the company name nor the agent but these rates are compared with what is offered by an agent from the same company.  This is a personal opinion to the best of my knowledge why you chose an agent over the direct purchase scheme.

For the Direct Purchase Scheme:
  • Male non-smoker of 30 years old
  • Premium for whole life is about $250/month until age 70
  • Total premium paid would be about $98k.
  • Sum insured: $200,000
  • No critical illness rider, if you want must top-up. The critical illness rider only cover 30 illnesses.

Via agent
  • Male non-smoker of 30 years old
  • Premium for whole life is about $150/month for 25 years and covered for whole life.
  • Total premium paid would be about $47k.
  • Sum insured: $210,000
  • If you want critical illness rider, it would be $207/month. The critical illness rider cover 36 illnesses, 6 more.
That's not including no advisory work (but that of course can be supplemented by online sites such as diyinsurance, etc) as well as no servicing agent.

Make some sense as well because I doubt the insurance company wants to kill off it's agents anyway (yes there's many products but still).
